Joe Fluge, the founder of K9 Crew, worked as an intelligence analyst with the Cass County Drug Task Force for over ten years. He now works full-time as a licensed private investigator in both North Dakota and Minnesota. Joe additionally serves in the Air National Guard as their Drug Demand Reduction Program regional manager, owns and operates Urban K9 Detection and Training, and is the lead instructor at K9 Crew. When he is not hard at work, Joe spends his time with his wife Kate, his three daughters and his Schneagle (a Schnauzer/Beagle mix).
Joe’s inspiration to find a program that would help at-risk youth was born from his own struggle with alcohol. When he finally resolved to quit, Joe sought distraction through his hobby of training dogs. Soon Joe’s hobby became his singular passion, and he became a certified dog trainer. After eight years of dedication to dog training, Joe opened his own business, Urban K9 Detection and Training.
In Joe’s new line of work, he became gravely concerned with the challenges facing today’s youth. The foremost of these is narcotics addiction, a bleak and soul-consuming evil that is devastating our country. Joe’s sense of debt to his community caused him to consider how he could personally help combat addiction. Joe understood that many addicts begin using drugs as a way of confronting challenges during their childhood years. He realized that, just as it had helped him out of his addiction, dog training could save at-risk teens from it as well.
Joe founded K9 Crew in 2016 with a simple goal: to teach at-risk teens the skills and insight needed to avoid drug use and other self-harming behaviors. Within two weeks of K9 Crew’s inaugural class, parents already began reporting positive changes in participants’ attitudes and behaviors.
By working with dogs of all breeds, ages and temperaments, kids develop a stronger sense of responsibility, improved patience and ability to cope with disappointment, frustration and fear. Joe could not be prouder of how greatly his students work to improve their lives.
